New Regulations for Offshore Hazardous Areas
Starting in 2018 new electrical regulations will come into effect concerning the use of intrinsically safe equipment, such as tablets, smartphones and cameras, in hazardous locations. These new regulations will affect the suppliers and manufacturers of equipment and devices, which are used in offshore and onshore Oil and Gas locations as well as the asset owner themselves.
The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), who are responsible for maritime safety and security in the United States. Offshore Continental Shelf, will no longer allow the use of hardware that is exclusively approved and certified under ATEX Directive 94/9/EC. A further IECEx-certification or an independent laboratory certification will also be necessary.
Changes to these regulations are necessary to keep a high level of safety in the face of the newest technological developments. Most IAMTech products are IECEx-certified to enable their use in many different locations and are fully compliant for the new US offshore regulations.
