The consumer market has been flooded with hundreds of different mobile devices for the last decade - from smartphones to tablets, everybody has their own preference of manufacturer, operating system, size and specification.
However, when you are buying a device for use in an industrial and/or explosive environment, this decision making process will become more complex due to the requirements of the business and the budget available which often leaves the buyer or buying company with far fewer devices to choose from.
To make sure that devices supplied are able to meet the exact requirements of the end user, it is important to have a large range of suitable options.
The Oil, Gas, Power and Chemical industries have finally caught up with the consumer market and now for the first time, you can select from a range of different intrinsically safe devices, including tablets and smartphones.
Some considerations you should consider in advance are:
Portability / Manageability - Which screen size do I need? How small or large should the device be? Should the glass be reinforced?
Connectivity / Synchronization – Do I only need Wi-Fi or do I need a device with 3G or 4G LTE? Will my site allow either?
Communication Capability – Will I predominantly use voice communication or send/ receive data? Do I need ‘push-to-talk’?
Compatibility and Interoperability - Which platform/OS is my company using now? Can another system be integrated into our current IT setup?
Durability and Reliability – Use in both Ex-Zones and harsh environments? How is my site currently rated? Do I have multiple ratings?
Total Cost of Ownership – costs of acquisition, training and eventually service/repairs. Do the devices come with a warranty or SLA?
Security and Privacy
Productivity – Which peripherals do I need? (Barcode-Scanners, Stylus, Straps, Harnesses, Casings etc.)
Hardware Requirements - Camera, Battery Life, Keypad/Touch Screen, Video Conferencing
Software / Application Requirements - OS, App Store Access and Google Play etc.
